10 Easy Houseplants for Beginners (or for the Absentminded plant lover!)

& Tips and Tricks for Caring for Them

A home just doesn’t look right without a plant. So, whether you are a beginner, student, or someone who love plants but have little time to take care of them, this list is for you. For those who are ready to put a little effort into developing their very own green thumb – read on!

With homes being air tight these days and most of us using dry heat and air-conditioning during the summer, lack of air humidity presents a tricky situation for many in the way of over-watering. Sometimes, one may look at a plant with dry leaves and dry soil on the surface and think that the plant needs more water when, in fact, it needs humidity. Many plants such as African Violets and Begonias have tiny hairs on or under the leaves and stem to collect moisture from the air. Even Cacti are designed to collect moisture on its spikes during rains. Try using a humidifier or spray bottle to gently mist your plants. Just be sure to let the water sit overnight to let any chemicals such as chlorine or fluoride evaporate. You should then find your plant needing less watering.

Even a plant that hasn’t been watered for weeks can become waterlogged if it sits in a container that is non-porous and has no drainage holes. Excess water will collect at the base of the pot, drowning the plant. Any excess moisture in the soil becomes a magnet and breeding ground for disease and pests. The best containers to use for indoor plants are porous pots, because they allow excess moisture to evaporate at the soil level and not just from the bottom. These can be placed in a larger waterproof container or saucer to prevent damage to carpets and floors.
